Muscular Dystrophy Association

Who is MDA? MDA is a voluntary health agency - a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. Currently, the local chapter in Omaha, NE serves over 700 families in Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.

What is Muscular Dystrophy? Muscular Dystrophy is a term describing a group of diseases characterized by progressive degeneration of voluntary muscles. MDA covers 43 diseases whose conditions vary in age of onset, rate of progression and muscles affected.

How Does MDA help in our Community? MDA has the most comprehensive program of any voluntary health agency in the country. MDA clinics provide an extensive program of authorized medical, therapeutic and counseling services to patients and their families at no direct cost to them. From its Omaha office, MDA provides at no cost:
    - Clinic - Located at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
    1. Initial diagnosis
    2. Follow-up medical care
    3. Physical, occupational, respiratory and orthopedic referrals
    4. Assist with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces
    5. Assist with the purchase of communication devices
    6. Influenza vaccinations
    7. MDA Equipment Pool

    - Summer Camp - Camp is provided for MDA children, ages 6-21. The children attend a weeklong session of fun including fishing, swimming, dancing, nature trails, and arts and crafts. Summer camp is held at no cost to the family.

    - Support Groups - Emotional and practical support of individuals affected by neuro muscular disease, as well as their family members, friends and caregivers. MDA currently holds an ALS Support Group in Eastern Nebraska, a Duchenne Support Group in Papillion and a General Support Group for Western Nebraska.

    - MDA Public Awareness and Research - MDA maintains a comprehensive education program to foster greater public understanding of neuro muscular disease and provides the most current and scientific and medical informtaion to clinicians and researchers. For our most recent research updates please check out our MDA National website at www.mdausa.org. As a result, over 10,000 individuals benefited from local MDA news releases, newsletters, and public presentations last year.
How efficient is MDA? MDA expands more than 76% of its income on program services.

How Much Do These Services Cost?
$25 - Provides an annual flu shot
$62 - Funds one minute of research
$100 - Funds one support group session
$150 - Covers a follow-up clinic visit
$600 - Sends one child to MDA summer camp
$750 - Pays for a muscle biopsy and interpretation
$2,000 - Goes toward the purchase of a wheelchair or leg braces and communication device.

Virtually all of MDA's support comes from private sources. MDA does not receive federal or state government funding. MDA is a member of the Combined Health Agency Drive (CHAD). KM3 News in Omaha and KLKN Channel 8 in Lincoln broadcast the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon in Nebraska. The remaining funding comes from many fundraising events sponsored throughout the year by local volunteer groups.
